Here's a thread for non-submission, non-diorama fanart, including scrapped organisms. I made this thread because apparently there isn't one for this subject here yet.

When I finish species art, I often post it on the various discord servers I'm on. After I posted Kehaida on one server, it inspired this piece of fanart by dawn-at-dusk / lenislynx on Tumblr (reposted with permission):

Forgot to post this here. I drew TheBigL's spotted sauceback with labels to serve as a more useful quick overview of the external anatomy of saucebacks.

I don't know why or when, but it feels like I've drawn this nodent before.

So the topic of plent reproduction came up, especially with the whole baby size vs mouth size thing, and I realized that if the Sagon (a sapient plent) is anything like a human, birth must really suck...

Random: after looking over the history of my artistic development, on a whim I have put together an alternate history where I joined Sagan 4 in March 2009.

These are not real species, as I was not aware of Sagan 4 until 2018 at the earliest, but rather approximations of what I would have submitted if I were a forum member at the time.

Assuming I made nodents, my first submission would be a norat descendant that look like this:

(though Cube pointed out that I would probably only give it 3 toes, I'm too lazy to revise)

It would, of course, be rejected. But that would not stop me from trying again later in the year, maybe July or August.

Something resembling this nodent would have been my first approved Sagan 4 submission.

Then I would cry like a baby as it's killed off in the snowball event and/or No-Snarf in early 2010.

I was inspired to add my own alternate-timeline where I joined Sagan 4 in May 2010.

It's a Woollycoat descendant that keeps its young in a fluff-coated brood patch on its back, and has longer, sharper, talon-like toes.

I made it using a laptop trackpad and by setting GIMP to an approximation of the version of Microsoft Paint I could access at the time.

This approximation is actually not the best I would be capable of at the time. I had the option of mechanical pencil drawings with colored pencil coloring, and it looked pretty good, though the poses and musculature would probably look off. I think I mostly drew digital art using a mouse, too, though I knew I was capable of drawings of roughly this quality, or even with backgrounds, using just a laptop trackpad.

I was going to give a brief anecdote of a possible art feud with alternate-timeline Disgustedorite and Nergali/alternate-timeline Nergali got involved because I accidentally made something grotesque Nergali liked, but that's very beyond the scope of a fan art topic.

I'm actually kinda interested in that speculative feud idea now.

same honestly.

Looks like I forgot to post this. It's an impossible fan species based on four-jawed saucebacks. It's smart, possibly a sophont or an ancestor of one, and able to use tools by using its feet and mouth together. I designed it for the Sagan 4 sporecast, in which I'm including non-canon sophonts so that tribal stage will have enough species to cover all scenarios.

Ooh. Cool Sophont! Also, to add to this speculative alternate timeline, if I had joined in 2016, when I found the project, instead of just lurking it, I would've most likely submitted as my first species an aerial crowngea descendant as an attempt to restart the sky ecosystem (I even gave the fully colored art for it somewhere). Even though the concept in principle is not necessarily a bad one despite possible dangers of overheating, it would probably have been rejected; as I was only ten at the time I was probably kinda awful at writing and I knew even less about biology than I do now. I'm not sure how I would have reacted to that. Probably would have said I was going to resubmit it later and then just never done on it because I was too lazy. then of course the project would have crashed and the idea would have probably disappeared until I rejoined later.
Also, what is Sporecast and where can I find the sagan4 one?

MNIDJM Shouldn't this and other Sagan 4 related art threads be in Sagan 4 general? Tide pool specifically says it is for stuff that is not related to Sagan 4.

I made another impossible sophont, this time rendered in Spore:

It's a descendant of the amplafeo, called a "werenix". I don't know why, but amplafeo gives off the vibe of something that should have a sophont cousin or descendant. I mean, just look at it.

Oh yeah, fun fact: the snowky and all of its descendants were endotherms and had full coats of fur! Even the ones that inexplicably lived in the deep sea like fish!

So like...switchfang. Assuming it survives week transition, I have some pretty wild plans for its dentition.
