Name: Coppertop Caves
Era: Week 27
Location: Otter Vents
Size: 100 sq. km
Primary Organisms:
  • Coppertop
  • Copperhead Octhermia
Light: Aphotic

The Coppertop Caves formed from Copperhead Octothermia finding their way into cracks around the hydrothermal vents. This gave rise to the Coppertop. There, they started using the sulfur provided from the vent to produce an acid that ate away at the stone. (Primarily found around the Otter Vents)

The crack grew larger and larger, forming a cave network. Colonies of coppertop and copperhead grew on the top and bottom of the cave network. The top layer is colder than the bottom. With an acid solution between them, the entire cave produces electrical energy thanks to the heat rising up from below.

Unlike the top or bottom layers are, the middle section of the cave is not protected against the acid , so the acid slowly eats away at the stone, expanding the caves.

Don't individual vent locations only last a few thousand years? This would basically be extinct on creation.

To be fair, if these are being created by a species wouldn’t the be constantly forming and breaking down?

It might be easier to remake it as an organism for 167

Vents do close up, and new ones open up.
These things act kinda like a slime mold, finding the shortest path between food points.

when one vent stops, the system will start spreading out looking for additional food sources... when it eventually finds them .... that path way will be strengthened.
