Id suggest changing the diet to say Larvae: Sanguivore, otherwise it sounds like it eats the blood of its own larvae like a vampire ant.

Does it make sense for it to be able to effectively herd so many unrelated species of herbivores? What if their soothing noises are very different? Herding either xatas or plents specifically would be broad enough to work, and they would plausibly have similar soothing sounds.

Meaning like one pack might have Dualtrunks while another might have Leafplates. My idea is to keep them general at first and then have their decedents specialize in a specific species where the one they use become "domesticated" in a way to co-evolve with them.
I don't know the exacting naming yet but could be like "Dualtrunk Shepherd Harnessback" or "Dualtrunk Shepherdback" where they specializein a new type of Dualtrunk that depends on them more and is less "wild" toward them.
In short these current ones are not as good at the job as their later decedents will be but they are smart enough to figure out what works well enough for their own chosen species.

I was simply wondering whether they would have the necessary anatomy, as a species, to produce the appropriate soothing noises for each herd fauna. Do they have mockingbird-like levels of vocal versatility, and simply choose one "path" depending on their pack? Do the packs exist as "xata", "plent", and other sub-species that don't externally differ except for calling behaviors and slight tweaks to vocal tract anatomy?

You also forgot to fix that really morbid likening of death to sleep. I really don't want to encounter such an unnerving, saddening turn of phrase in a context that doesn't warrant it.

Strangely enough, I could see a Neoshrew evolving from this to exploit the farming tactics of the Shepherd Harnessback or even turn the tables on them somehow.
I'm certain that these will develop a lovely relationship with the Cleaner Ukneuk... and a much lesser one with the Bludblugs.
