I have updated the description. Is it sufficiently plausible? I'm not actually sure if there is any parallel to this.

The spongy tissue is a great explanation, it would strike me as something easily expanded on in future species, with the keratin providing safety and prevention of dessication.
They would be somewhat delicate compared to their boney counterparts though.

If able to pry them open they would be a good place to make them bleed out for a predator, until blood is constricted.

But I may have a misunderstanding of how strong keratin horns are.

I'd also like to bring up that this is a fantastic species for developing aggressive polyandry if their spawning season is long enough.
