The "needles" are its flowers.

I see. The flowers were described as just "needles" in its ancestor's description.

I think support would just be cellulose cell walls, and respiration in purple flora at least seems to be gently regarded as stomata.

Thermoregulation could be Ectotherm.

Surely you can elaborate on the persistence and adaptive value of its striped pattern? It wouldn't function in the same way as before, with Bombardier Clipperkins so long extinct.
Could you add some shading? It's hard to tell its shape.
There's some other feedback I'll give later.

I kinda wonder if the pattern would not become obscure or migratory, as it's not detrimental to the survival of the individual, but it's consistency would not be that important either.

Can you elaborate on the striped coloration? The reason presently given surely wouldn't work.

The lineage has had stripes of some sort for at least 107 million years and meanwhile we don't have a scientifically agreed upon explenation for the stripes of water melons IRL beyond supermarket myths. it might be a bit handwavy to say its an ancient genetic tie in, but if RL spec evo does it i think we're in the green.
